· Came to prominence in 1925 at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris – then called “Style Moderne” which eventually became Art Deco
· Officially the Deco period ended in 1939. Deco design was not restricted to architecture, also influencing fashion, furniture, jewellery, art, films etc
· Deco architecture style is about symmetry, clean, bold, simple geometric lines & shapes, combined with beautiful finishes in stone, concrete, brass, glass
· I love doing Deco searches. A house I viewed in Ivanhoe early this year was an incredible example of Deco – I felt like I was on a 1930s ocean liner! Perhaps my favourite Melbourne residential deco building is the Beverley Hills apartment block at 65 Darling St in South Yarra, It was built in 1935 – 36 & designed by Howard Lawson. The swimming pool is particularly charming. I like it so much I Airbnb ed an apartment there to fully experience it. Well worth a visit, & afterwards walk around the corner to Lawson Grove Shop – completed in 1930 – for a coffee
· If you are a Deco fan – Potts Point in Sydney has Australia’s most concentrated collection of Deco buildings
· As well as its obvious aesthetic appeal the supply & demand equation – very limited supply (& in highly desirable inner city suburbs) & consistent intense demand -makes it a very good capital growth play
